Getting
Around
Malaysia has a well developed internal transportation
infrastructure enabling travel within the country to be
convenient, speedy and relatively inexpensive. All major
towns have road, rail and air links and there is a good
public transportation system which includes rental cars,
taxis, buses, a Light Rail Transit (LRT) System in the
capital city of Kuala Lumpur which links to the adjoining
Klang Valley district. Another rail service known as KTM
Komuter connects surburban or adjoining districts with
Kuala Lumpur.
By Air
The other alternative is to use domestic services available
from the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah International Airport
at Subang, Selangor. Aside from Malaysia Airlines, other
domestic airlines such as Pelangi Air, Berjaya Air, Transmile,
Air Asia and Sabah Air also serve popular tourist destinations
within the country.
There are domestic air services linking KL International
Airport with major cities within the Peninsula and with
Sabah and Sarawak. Points linked to Kuala Lumpur include
lpoh, Penang, Alor Setar, Langkawi, Kota Bharu, Kuala
Terengganu, Kuantan, Johor Bahru, Kota Kinabalu, Sandakan,
Lahad Datu, Tawau, Labuan, Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and
Miri. By Road
Most points in Peninsular Malaysia are accessible via
the North-South Expressway which links up to coastal roads
and the rest of the road arteries in the country. The
Expressway is an excellent road network, allowing you
to drive through Peninsular Malaysia. There are also other
modern highways, connecting towns and villages throughout
the length and breadth of the country.
Interstate air-conditioned buses ply between most cities
and towns in Malaysia. They offer comfortable rides at
reasonable rates. These are to be found in all major cities
and offer air-conditioned comfort at metered rates. There
are set charges for outstation travel.
By Rail
The railway network extends from neighbouring Singapore
through major cities and towns within Peninsular Malaysia
up to Thailand, on both the West and East Coasts. You
can travel in air-conditioned comfort in daytime first
class coaches with single or double berths. Second class
coaches also have sleeping berths. By Sea
Ferry services are offered to major islands. In Peninsular
Malaysia, the ferry service between Butterworth and Penang
Island is still popular despite the Penang Bridge link.
A modern ferry service is offered from Kuala Perlis on
the mainland to Pulau Langkawi, a popular tourist destination.
Regular boat services are available on the Lumut-Pangkor
Island and the Mersing-Tioman Island routes. A longboat
service is available from Labuan to Menumbak in Sabah.
In the riverine areas of Sarawak, the major means of transportation
are air-conditioned express boats.
Transportation
in Malaysia
Taxis
Taxis are fitted with meters and can be hailed at designated
taxi stands or booked by phone. The flag fare is RM2 and
10 sen for every 200 meters there on.
LRT
LRT covers a distance of 12 km and consists of 13 stations.
Daily operating hours are between 6 am to 12 midnight.
Season tickets can be purchased at any LRT station.
Car Rental
Serveral car - rental agencies offer self - drive cars
for hire if you posses a valid international driving license.
Keep a road map on hand and fasten your seat belt (compulsory
for passengers). Speed limit in town is 50km per hour.
Always keep to the left side of the road if you are going
slow. Railway
In Malaysia, all tracks lead to Kuala
Lumpur. Two main railway lines operate for pasenger service.
One runs along the west coast from singapore to Kuala
Lumpur and Butterworth, then meets the Thai railways at
the border. The other line travels up to the north - eastern
part of the peninsular near Kota Bharu, also meeting up
with Thai railways. Commuter Trains
KTM Commuter operates speedy electric train services from
KL railways station to designated points within the city
as well as to port Klang, Seremban, Kajang and Rawang.
Limousines
Limousine KLIA provides taxis and limousine services to/from
KLIA sepang airport. Fares are from RM65 to RM120 for
one way trip. Alternative is to board the Airport Coach
Express service at HentianDuta (KL Terminal), Chan Sow
Lin, STAR LRT Stations. One way adult fares range from
RM20 from KLIA to hentian Duta and Rm25 from KLIA to hotels
in KL City Center (inclusive of pick - up) and drop of

Buses
Fares for city buses vary depending on the destination
and whether the bus is air- conditloned. Always flag for
buses and carry small change.
Klang Valley Buses - Four major bus lines service the
city and suburban areas, namely Intrakota, Park May, Metro
and City Liner. The following bus terminals within the
city cover specific areas within Klang Valley:

Interstate Buses -Several bus companies operate intercity
stage and express bus services to various destinations
in the peninsular. Bus terminals for interstate buses
are located at:
- Putra Bus Station - to the East Coast
- Pekeliling Bus Station - to the East Coast
- Pudu Raya Bus Station - to the North and South,
including Singapore
