Transportations in Hong Kong

Hong Kong is geographically compact and boasts one of the world’s most efficient, safe, affordable and frequent public transport system.

Buses
Double-decker buses, which run from 6am till midnight, cover most parts of the territory. All are relatively inexpensive, with fares ranging from HK$ 1.2 to HK$ 45. The fare is paid on entering the bus; exact fare is required.

Minibuses are yellow with a red stripe. These pick up passengers and let them off anywhere along a designated route except at double-decker bus stops and in restricted areas. A sign on the front (some with the English version below) indicates the final destination. Fares in urban areas usually range from HK$1.5 to $18. Pay as you alight; change is given.

Maxicabs are yellow with a green stripe. These run specific routes and have fixed prices ranging from HK$ 2 to HK$20, depending on the distance traveled. A sigh on the front indicates the destination. Pay the exact fare as you get on.

Bus Routes
There are 3 Bus Companies with overlaping routes.Their single-deck and double-deck Big Buses also have compettion from Mini Buses on some routes. Buses require "Exact Change". An "Octopus Card" solve that problem on most major transportation including the MTR. Visitors should get one to use.

Bus Route Numbers give an indication of routing per: Single & Double Digit numbers don't cross harbour.
1XX indicates via Hung Hom Cross Harbour Tunnel.
6XX indicates via the Eastern Cross Harbour Tunnel.
9XX indicates via the Western Cross Harbour Tunnel.

New World First Bus (Telephone to : 2136 - 8888) operates mainly on H.K. Island plus via Tunnels.

Taxi
Taxis are also plentiful and getting around town is generally quick and easy. As in all major cities, however, it is best to avoid rush house (08:00am-10:00am and 05:00pm-07:00pm)

Mass Transit Railway (MTR)
Clean, fast and efficient, its mostly underground air-conditioned trains run along the north coast of Hong Kong Island and across the harbour where the route splits into east and west lines in Kowloon.

The KCR mainly seves the New Territories - the KCR East Rail operates between Hung Hom and the boundary with Mainland China crossing at Lo Wu while the KCR Light Rail runs between Yuen Long and Tuen Mun
